Presented by Tom Fidgen
For the first time in Australia Tom Fidgen, author of ‘Made by Hand’ and ‘The Unplugged Woodshop’ will be joining the Melbourne Guild of Fine Woodworking to teach his ‘Could You in a Box’ course.
“Most of the furniture projects we make are based around a basic box form. A blanket chest, a chest of drawers, a sideboard, an entertainment unit, book shelves, wall cabinets, medicine chests, even side tables with drawers- they’re all boxes of one form or another.
In this 4 day course, you’ll take a piece of rough lumber, and go through the steps of designing your own “box”. From rough sketch to full scale drawings, cut lists and layout. The skills involved in basic box making will carry over to many of the furniture techniques you’ll use the rest of your days.
From the cradle to the grave, there’s a box for every occasion. A tool box, a wine box, a keep-sake box, a candle box. Think outside the box!
You’ll take your own original design from idea to execution in 4 days. We’ll look at joinery examples, from rabbets and grooves, to dovetails and finger joints.A mitered box, butt joints and nails, a box with splines. You can make a box with a sliding lid, or a box that holds a drawer.
Hand tool techniques and design, joinery and finish…..we’ll cover all the basics in this 4 day intensive.”
Don’t miss out on this once in a lifetime opportunity with Tom Fidgen!!
