Presented by Alastair Boell
Presented for the second time at the Melbourne Guild of Fine Woodworking, this is an opportunity to make one of the all time classic Windsor chairs – the ‘Fan Back’. Arguably the Windsor is the most successful chair ever designed. These chairs, both in England and America dominated the furniture landscape for well over 150 years. Still to this day, in both countries, the Windsor chair enjoys immense popularity.
The ‘Fan Back Side Chair’ is the second class resulting from Peter Galbert’s teaching trip in Australia. This Fan Back chair is now our compulsory first chair for those who have never made a Windsor chair.
This six day course offers you the full Windsor chair experience at a relaxed pace, but without the hustle and bustle of the more complicated Continuous Arm chair.
This beautifully designed Fan Back chair makes for a great dining room table side chair. With this Fan Back, you’ll learn how to steam bend a crest rail, carve and fit your spindles, carve your seat and fit your legs and stretcher system perfectly with all its complex angles and joinery. You’ll learn to use proficiently all the unique tools associated with the making of a Windsor chair.
Time permitting, you will also learn to finish the chair in natural oil or traditional Milk Paint imported from the USA.
