Shaker Bentwood Tray

$370 AUD (2024 course)

Presented by Matt Stonehouse

Adapting the classic Shaker oval box, we present to you the ‘Shaker Bentwood Tray’ course.
While not traditional, this form echoes the look of iconic Shaker box tops. Like the oval boxes, these trays possess grace, simplicity and great utility. They make the perfect gift and like oval boxes, they nest for compact storage.

Students will learn to bevel, steam and bend Shaker tray bands and fit and tack them to tray bottoms. It will be possible to make up to 3 trays per class – from sizes 8 , 10 & 12. The measurements of size 12 (the largest tray) is 550mm x 380mm.

You will be directed to the MindBody booking page.

We will be using Cherry which is sourced directly from the USA. Because these trays are relatively large, it is necessary to use veneered plywood for the bases. We will be using Cherry Veneer for these bases as well. You will learn how to glue these veneers onto plywood using one of our 2 vacuum presses.

Discussion topics will include re-sawing wood into box bands, making or ordering templates, cutting finger patterns, making oval cores for shaping bands and sources for box materials. Time permitting, we will also cover finishing with shellac, oil and/or wax.
