The Melbourne Guild of Fine Woodworking was founded by Alastair Boell in 2007. After graduating from the world renowned North Bennet Street School, Boston (USA) Alastair felt that there was a great need in Australia for an educational facility that focuses on traditional skills.

The Guild is committed to preserving and advancing craft traditions in furniture making. We are also committed to promoting a greater awareness and appreciation of
craftsmanship. In our classes we emphasize the skillful use of hand tools and power equipment and an informed use of appropriate materials. We are passionate about what we do and want to share information, ideas and skills with all our students young and old, from beginner to advanced.

Class Room

Each of the 4 classrooms have four very large workbenches. Each class has a maximum of 8 students unless otherwise stated. There is a well-equipped modern air conditioned kitchen with tea and coffee facilities. There are clean male and female toilets. All 4 classrooms are air conditioned. There are tools provided and plenty of storage space for your work and/or timber. There is also a well-stocked resource library full of books sourced from all over the world. We also have well stocked timber racks full of salvaged timbers that the students are welcome to purchase from The Guild or from our online store.

Machine Room

The machine room is one of the highlights of the workshop. Extremely well equipped, it boasts some impressive machines that enable us to undertake just about any project. Most importantly, there is dust extraction to every machine. All the dirty air is pumped outside. There is more storage on the mezzanine for student timber and half made projects. There is also another work bench with a vise and a down draft table for hand sanding.
