The Melbourne Guild of Fine Woodworking was founded by Alastair Boell in 2007. After graduating from the world renowned North Bennet Street School, Boston (USA) Alastair felt that there was a great need in Australia for an educational facility that focuses on traditional skills.

The Guild is committed to preserving and advancing craft traditions in furniture making. We are also committed to promoting a greater awareness and appreciation of
craftsmanship. In our classes we emphasize the skillful use of hand tools and power equipment and an informed use of appropriate materials. We are passionate about what we do and want to share information, ideas and skills with all our students young and old, from beginner to advanced.

Timber

Timber disclaimer

  1. The nature of recycled, and natural timber, (and what we love about it) is that there is great variance of tone, recycled and natural character including gum vein, gum pockets, grain pattern, knots, nail holes, rust staining and bolt holes. We cannot guarantee to reproduce an exact match to the appearance and tone of the timber from a product displayed on our website as we only have access to the timber that is available at the time.

  2. We undertake to match the timber as close as possible to your preferences as described to us. If you prefer, you are welcome to hand pick the timber from our racks. Alternatively and at your request, we can provide you with images of the timber picked for your piece before beginning the assembly for your approval. We will not offer any refunds, replacement or exchanges for pieces for which the timber has been picked to your requirements or as chosen by you, unless otherwise required by law.

  3. All of our timber is furniture grade timber obtained by us, or from third party suppliers. Our suppliers have informed us that the timber moisture content levels do not exceed 12% but we cannot guarantee that every piece of timber has been checked. Timber is a natural living product and always moves, depending upon the surrounding environment. For example, moisture held within the timber can dry when moved to a heated environment. When a change in environment occurs quickly, small splits in the timber may appear, timber may bow, expand and contract. This is to be expected and is not a defect, but part of the natural adaptation process.
