The Melbourne Guild of Fine Woodworking was founded by Alastair Boell in 2007. After graduating from the world renowned North Bennet Street School, Boston (USA) Alastair felt that there was a great need in Australia for an educational facility that focuses on traditional skills. 

The Guild is committed to preserving and advancing craft traditions in furniture making. We are also committed to promoting a greater awareness and appreciation of
craftsmanship. In our classes we emphasize the skillful use of hand tools and power equipment and an informed use of appropriate materials. We are passionate about what we do and want to share information, ideas and skills with all our students young and old, from beginner to advanced.

Presented by Wanda Gillespie

Join contemporary artist and woodcarver Wanda Gillespie for an immersive evening of carving. These open classes are designed for all levels — whether you’re beginning your first carving project or developing an existing one.

Learn at your own pace as Wanda guides you through tool handling, timber selection, sharpening, and finishing techniques. Explore both traditional and contemporary carving methods while working on a project of your choice, or follow one of Wanda’s set projects.

Previous classes have included carving acanthus leaves, ornamental relief designs, birds, owls, and animals, as well as chip-carved patterns on bowls and sculptural forms. Wanda’s own artistic practice focuses on figurative and portrait sculpture, and she’s happy to share her expertise with anyone interested in exploring this area.

Whether you’d like to follow a guided project or bring your own creative idea, you’ll receive hands-on support every step of the way in a relaxed and inspiring workshop setting.

Wanda Gillespie

Wanda is a contemporary artist working in sculpture, installation and public art. Renowned for her interactive small and large scale abacus sculptures as well as her wood carved figurative and portrait sculpture, she is driven by a belief in the spiritual potency of physical matter.

Her work explores themes of history, time, truth, and the mystical, drawing inspiration from ancient artifacts and the harmonious patterns and perfection of nature’s mathematics.
