The Melbourne Guild of Fine Woodworking was founded by Alastair Boell in 2007. After graduating from the world renowned North Bennet Street School, Boston (USA) Alastair felt that there was a great need in Australia for an educational facility that focuses on traditional skills.

The Guild is committed to preserving and advancing craft traditions in furniture making. We are also committed to promoting a greater awareness and appreciation of
craftsmanship. In our classes we emphasize the skillful use of hand tools and power equipment and an informed use of appropriate materials. We are passionate about what we do and want to share information, ideas and skills with all our students young and old, from beginner to advanced.

Simeon Dux is a fine furniture designer and maker from Melbourne, who specializes in crafting unique one of a kind pieces.

Already a qualified joiner and carpenter, Sim began his fine furniture making education at the Melbourne Guild of Fine Woodworking as a student under the guidance of Alastair Boell with further studies in finishing techniques with Eddy Toffoletti, chair making with Jon Grant and Parquetry with Peter Young. He launched his furniture making business in 2015 while as an Artist in Residence at the Guild, where he worked on commissions, restorations and continued to develop his personal style.

While assisting renowned American teacher and writer Steve Latta, for a month in 2018, he gained valuable skills in traditional 18th century inlay and detailing such as string inlay and paterae, which he continues to practice and try to integrate into his work.

In 2019 Simeon was accepted into the 3 year tenancy program at the Victorian Woodworkers Association in North Melbourne after which he entered his first exhibition and took out 1st place in the furniture category for his Berlin Drinks Cabinet.

He is interested in classic design and traditional detailing and strives to reinterpret these styles in elegant contemporary ways, which has led to him creating pieces for acclaimed artists and architects, commercial spaces, hospitality venues and discerning private clients.

Sim was a speaker at WoodDust Designer Maker 2019, and his work has been featured in the pages of Australian Wood Review Magazine and on the socials of Fine Woodworking (USA).
