The Melbourne Guild of Fine Woodworking was founded by Alastair Boell in 2007. After graduating from the world renowned North Bennet Street School, Boston (USA) Alastair felt that there was a great need in Australia for an educational facility that focuses on traditional skills.

The Guild is committed to preserving and advancing craft traditions in furniture making. We are also committed to promoting a greater awareness and appreciation of
craftsmanship. In our classes we emphasize the skillful use of hand tools and power equipment and an informed use of appropriate materials. We are passionate about what we do and want to share information, ideas and skills with all our students young and old, from beginner to advanced.

Lee grew up on a fruit farm in Queensland, with his father’s steel and timber workshop in the front yard. This spurred a lifelong passion for learning and perfecting new skills. He has worked as a furniture maker overseas and in Australia for over 20 years.

His furniture making workshop GRATTON crafts bespoke standalone pieces and high-end timber cabinetry for residential, hospitality and commercial clients. He also collaborates with other designers on prototyping, process and small batch manufacturing.

As well as furniture and cabinetry, Lee also handmakes guitars and ukuleles and steel bicycle frames. He is influenced by Scandinavian design principles and favours simple clean lines and functional design.

Lee works out of his home workshop in leafy Warrandyte and enjoys teaching his three kids the joys of woodworking.
